PS3 Firmware 3.21 Coming April 1st; Removes OtherOS Feature!

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3.
And also: Don't update to 3.21...
A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be available this Thursday. It will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, we’re now removing this feature.
Oh man! That sucks.
And if you don't upgrade you'll lose the ability to:
- Sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings).
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.
Oh man! That sucks even more.

im surprised that people still believe anything that comes out of sony anymore. after all the lies and half-truths that come out of their marketing department im not surprised at this move.on the other hand this could just be a temporary thing, i mean after all it wouldnt be the first time sony has removed a feature from its systems with a firmware update only to re-implement it at a later date.
If they bring it back, it will be full of new security so we might aswel not have it. It will be no use to use after Sony has their way with it.

This is not a joke, i called 1(800) 345-7669 (sony help line) and they told me that it was due to the end of the contract with YDL and they also have too many returns that were messed up by linux. I say this is bull shit that they are going to do this. We need to keep them loaded down with calls and fight this a diffrent way. Many users bought this system thinking they could use linux (other os feature) and play games while logging into the playstation network fine without having to be blocked out of anything and was an agreement when buying Sony's hardware and Sony EVEN ADVERTISED THE "OTHER OS FEATURE" to work with ps3 this way and to work with everything else such as gaming online and downloading content from their psn store, if they cripple "other os" by making you update and losing out on one or other features then that is false advertisement and would end up pretty bad on their side. So don't even speak when you have no idea what's going on and have no idea what you paid for (unless you have a slim model ps3).
True.. Few years ago, Palm had to reimburse buyers of m130 because they advertised it as having 64K colors screen. It turned out it has only about 60k colors (some tweaking of the LCD they used, I don't remember), so they gave back money to people... I replaced mine, not that the number of colors was noticable, but in the meantime, for the money I paid for m130, I could buy much better Sony CLIE model. :)
Problem is, what you bought can still do otherOS. It just won't be supported by any more updates. So there isn't really any false advertising.

COMPLETELY SCRATCH MY LAST POST SORRY I MISUNDERSTOOD UR QUESTION WELLLL I thought u meant Sony isn't providing any more updates through firmware to make the other os feature more stable but still keep ps3 firmware updates coming in but no more updates for other os feature specifically (sorry if that sounds confusing). But still that is stupid and that is what I meant still by false advertising... I said when u bought the hardware the agreement was to do everything on the psn while still keeping and being open to use other os feature with no problems and now we have a problem which broke that agreement on Sony's side and it doesn't matter if their billionaire's heck I don't care if they are any other "illionaire's" in the world that is false advertising and everyone including Sony knows it, not our fault that Sony can't make a patch and simply keep the function but just patch geohot's hack (then again though he did say Sony would have a tough time patching that problem up haha) not our fault all Sony's for not being able to keep their security good not that any manufacturer can because there is no such thing as perfect security haha.

ur an idiot dude, I use my ps3 with a studio version of linux, because I do music, and the ps3 is pretty fast, I just plug up my alesis interface into the usb, hook up my mic's and start recording. Never ever hacked anything on the ps3. I still have the box, and the manual, and it does say it supports linux. This is a feature I paid for, for a specific reason, and now I'm being ripped off by sony because of what someone else did. And on top of that, so what he hacked it, they should have known that that would have happened eventually, and had a better way to deal with it than this. I went through with the update not realizing I couldn't reverse it and it was permanent, lost alot of data, it was really messed up, partially my fault for not reading through everything, but the other updates never did anything like this. I love video games, and I love music, and I had both in one box, and because of some stupid childish drama, now I only have video games, which to me, in itself, isn't worth 600 dollars. The sony employees have no manners, they treated me like crap on the phone. This is 100% illegal and for those of you, including the dipshit dylan supposed lawyer, do you see how many posts already are complaints about this? This is going to blow up real big, real soon, it is, in fact, a crime, it violates our constitutional rights, and anyone who hires dylan as a lawyer, ur a freakin idiot lol.. oh, and btw, F U SONY!

Removing this feature is not going to stop anyone from hacking it, all you need is a good laptop and Linux to do the trick :_) I am sure there is already a workaround in place as soon as this firmware is released. Or if you have 2 PS3's you could use the one for the other OS and the other to play your games and log onto PlayStation network.

Like, givin time and effort--hard work ? Because I don't want to update my ps3 at all anymore since this exploit was discoverd, and if a cfw is made we would probably install it in the ps3 recovery menu right?I'm not the type of person looking to pirate ps3 games, just ps2 games since I have a 40gb non backwards compatible system. I'm just looking forward to system tweaks such as in game music, and REAL themes. Do you think this exploit will lead to that givin the right amount of time and study?

I'm only on this site because google took me here. I wasn't searching for hacks either, I was just searching for information on what in the hell is going on. I'm sure alot of people got here that way. I'm not really pissed at the guy who hacked it, maybe a little, but not really. I am angry at sony though. Instead of trying to fix the exploits, they just punish the whole consumer base. Check this shyt out.. This affects alot more than the few hackers they're trying to punish.
